Yes. We have a policy that all rugs we offer for sale in our showroom, whether new or used must be prewashed. The same policy applies to PersianRugCollections.com.

Some very fine hand knotted area rugs tend to curl along the edges. To prevent this curling, leather strips are sewn to the back edges of the rug lengthwise. This does not damage the rug in any way.

Rugs which are tea washed undergo a dying technique to make simulate and aged look and add a golden-like luster to the rug with muted colors. This process is common for rugs from India and Pakistan and sometimes China. It is rare for authentic Persian rugs to be tea washed.

Most area rugs are wool-pile which means the rug’s pile of made of 100% wool but the warp is made from a material other than wool, usually cotton or silk. The pile of the rug is what you see and feel. The warp is the part of the rug you do not see but it is the foundation of the rug. Since wool is very soft and flexible rug weavers instead use cotton in the foundation to provide more stiffness in a rug. You can easily determine the material in a rug’s warp by examining the fringe. For more information, visit the Educational page.

Like all other handmade products, some handmade rugs may include slight human imperfections. One of them is 'abrash'. When weaving a handmade rug, if the weaver runs out of wool, they will have to dye a new pile of wool. Naturally there may be a slight variation in the shade of the color and you may see this in the rug. This is 'abrash'.

This is not permanent. After opening a rug that has been folded for an extended period there will appear to be a crease. This crease will quickly disappear through regular use. Or you can recue the crease but vacuuming your rug with a suction brush. See our Educational page for more about rug care.
